Trending now: Plastic is the new black

It was fashion’s biggest night and plastics stole the show thanks to actress Emma Watson’s pantsuit made from recycled plastic bottles.  Designer Calvin Klein and Livia Firth, environmental activist and founder of Eco Age Ltd., collaborated together on the black and white ensemble.

The dress over pants outfit was made entirely from sustainable materials.

“The body of the look is crafted from three different fabrics all woven from yarns made from recycled plastic bottles, the zippers are made from recycled materials and the inner bustier has been created using organic cotton,” Eco Age added.

The trend for incorporating recycled plastics has started to really take off in the fashion industry. Celebrity music mogul Pharrell Williams recently launched his latest project: He’s the co-designer at G-Star Raw for the Oceans, a clothing line made out of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles.

Following in the wake of Emma Watson’s widely heralded Calvin Klein plastic dress pantsuit at the Met Gala, which was made from recycled plastic bottles, comes Sarah Jessica Parker (SJP) as the latest celebrity to show off how elegant plastic can be. The actress showed up at the 2016 Parsons Benefit at Chelsea Piers with her husband actor Matthew Broderick in a transparent plastic gown over a navy and white dress at the NYC event.

The actress, most famously known for her fashion-forward choices, was channeling her famous on-screen TV character Carrie Bradshaw from the HBO sitcom Sex in the City in the Valentino designer Pisa String Body studded tunic dress over a navy bodystocking and a long tulle tutu. The dress is part of the designer’s fall/winter 2016 runway collection, which featured jeweled accents and spaghetti straps over the plastic overlay frock.

It seems to be a growing trend in the fashion industry where designers are becoming increasingly adventurous, creating stylish, beautiful clothing designs from plastic waste.

Other big name brands have taken a leap towards eco-friendly fashion in efforts to echo consumer sentiment regarding sustainability and responsible sourcing.

Adidas collaborated with Parley for the Oceans to create a shoe made entirely of yarns and filaments reclaimed and recycled from ocean waste and illegal deep-sea gillnets.

Global musical artist and producer will.i.am and the beverage giant Coca-Cola joined forces to create the EKOCYCLE brand, which is dedicated to help push for sustainability into peoples’ lives by offering lifestyle products made in part from recycled content.

Also, a St George’s artist and designer Tara Cassidy unveiled a collection of unique jewelry last year in effort to highlight an environmental cause, with each piece in the collection made from upcycled sea plastics and “inspired by the land, sand and sea of Bermuda.”
