Polyurethane: Shortage with March maintenance at BASF and Sadara

Baspar / Iranpolymer  No relief is expected for the polyurethane landscape in Europe in the coming weeks, although TDI has recently shown signs of a turning point. Polyols, on the other hand, are scarce – and also more expensive – than they have been for a number of years.

A possible further recovery stands in the way of at least maintenance of two essential plants. For the TDI production of BASF (Ludwigshafen) in Ludwigshafen a shutdown is rumored in March, at the same time the Dow joint venture Sadara Chemical (Jubail / Saudi Arabia) has maintenance for the large polyether-polyol line in Al Jubail scheduled. However, rumors are increasing for the TDI system that it should be less about maintenance and more about a major repair. A BASF spokeswoman confirmed that there was a technical problem with the plant at the beginning of February. However, the repair has now been completed and the system is running again.
